Joy-led play and learning hub for curious minds

The Attic is a joyful, play-led learning community in Stroud, Gloucestershire, for children aged 5–10. Rooted in respect, curiosity and consent, we create a safe, nurturing space where children can grow through self-directed learning, democratic collaboration and play.

Our Approach

At The Attic, learning is guided by curiosity, consent and connection.
We follow a natural, self-directed approach inspired by educational thinkers including John Holt, Aletha Solter and Paulo Freire — valuing freedom, empathy and the right of every child to be heard.

Our facilitators act as guides, supporting children to lead their own learning journeys, explore ideas collaboratively, and solve problems creatively.
Through play, reflection and community, we nurture lifelong curiosity and confidence — helping each child grow into a resilient, compassionate learner.

How we grow together

Small, Attentive Group Size

We operate with a maximum of ten children (age 5-10), so each child gets attuned attention and care.

"The essence of play is freedom - children choose what to do, how long to do it, and who to do it with."
